Sleep: the elixir of life

What makes our body and psyche healthy and strong is as simple as it is natural:  sleep - and plenty of it! No other factor has a greater or more direct impact on our health and well-being. At night, the body and mind undergo important regeneration and self-healing processes that maintain and renew our physical and mental strength. We refuel at night; our brain processes the day’s events and solidifies memories; organs and tissues are given an “overhaul”; infections are fought and cells are renewed. The greater our day-to-day strain and the more complex the demands placed on us, the more important the restorative power of a good night’s sleep.

The World Health Organization, WHO, long ago recognized the importance of healthy sleep and declared it the third and most important building block for a healthy life, in addition to conscious nutrition and exercise. People who sleep well are demonstrably more resistant to stress, get sick less often and reduce the signs of aging.  On the other hand, people who are short on sleep or who do not experience very restorative sleep suffer the consequences.

Studies show that a lack of sleep and poor sleep quality are linked with susceptibility to stress, depression, diabetes, excess weight, high blood pressure and heart disease, an increased risk of cancer, poor wound healing, susceptibility to infections, and difficulties with learning, concentration and memory.

Despite these facts, sleep often comes up short in our performance-focused society, and people are largely unfamiliar with the concept of healthy sleep culture -  all too often, restorative sleep is still considered a matter of luck. Many people only think about their sleep when it becomes a problem, but we can actively work to make sure our sleep is restorative. Being informed about healthy sleep culture and understanding what happens while we sleep allows us to (once again) make sleep what it should be: deep relaxation and regeneration for the body and mind.
